Following a presentation to the City of London Corporation, the Areca Design team were commissioned to provide a way for the residents, workers and visitors to London City to locate toilet facilities.
In addition to the twelve award-winning toilets and four pop-up night time urinals that the City provides, 75 local pubs, restaurants and shops signed up to their Community Toilet Scheme. This Scheme, which has now been running for around five years, enables members of the public to use these private facilities without having to make a purchase, in return for a small annual fee paid to the business by the City. However, the challenge has always been to inform and direct these available facilities. Until now, a small window sticker was the only method of identifying the toilets’ location.
Areca Design’s solution was to provide a GPS enabled mobile app, which identifies the user's position, overlaying relevant information about the toilets through the smart device's camera. The City Toilet Finder App makes use of Augmented Reality to present useful information to the user. GPS markers show where the toilets are located and then the viewer simply walks towards the selected toilet. The viewer can also use a map feature to find a toilet, select more information about the location, view the facilities available and leave a rating score.
Since the launch, in April 2015, there has already been around 2,800 people download the app, on both Apple and Android platform devices, such as tablets and mobile phones. The City of London Corporation will now start to promote the app to visitors and commuters who find themselves within the Square Mile.
Philip Everett, Director of The City of London's Built Environment stated:
"The City of London has a growing night-time economy and visitor population, and this App will help improve our street environment. It's an important piece of green technology, because it guides Londoners to the Square Mile's public toilets, but also to the restaurants, shops and pubs that have signed up to our Community Toilet Scheme, which lets the public use their toilets for free".
Mick Hurst, Managing Director of Areca Design commented, “It was a great honour to be asked by such a large, influential public body, such as the City of London Corporation, to provide a solution to an issue that was often bought to their attention. The subsequent projects currently underway are definitely more prestigious but might not be as appreciated by the public as the ability to easily and quickly find a toilet.”
Following the success of the first commission for the City of London Corporation, Areca Design has been asked to work on several other high profile projects, which will be launched throughout the upcoming months.
